Game 1 Baldur 2 vs. Hayley 2
Learning how to use this app.. I accidentally deleted the original post.. so going to do a quick run thru on this one. Great way to start this off..
This first game is against Justin, who is one of the better players at my LGS. He consistently wins tourneys and is often in first place.
I enjoy playing him because I always learn something about the game.
The lists:
Baldur 2 - Theme: Bones of Orboros
-Woldwrath
-Megalith
-Wold Guardian
-Woldwyrd x2
Sentry stones x2
Shifting stones
Blackclad Wayfarer x2
Gallows groves
Bunker
Hayley 2 - Theme: Heavy Metal
-Squire
-Stormwall
-Centurion
-Thorne
Junior
-Hunter
Jakes
-Thunderhead
Strangewayes
Bunker
Scenario was recon. House in the middle of the table between the flag and zone basically cut the map in half. Both of our theme lists granted a bonus 2" to deployment. The table felt quite small but this worked well to Baldur's brick playstyle.
We decided not to play on time because this was my first time thru with the theme list and in hindsight that was a poor choice.. the game was long.. luckily the store manager plays warmachine as well and stayed after hours to let us finish.
I won the roll and opted to go first. Wolds are slow and I wanted to run them turn 1. Hayley chose the side with the wall to hide behind.
Circle turn 1
Stuff ran. Sentries moved up to create a forest wall with the objective in the middle. Woldwrath ran up to complete the wall. Megalith and the Guardian ran up behind the forests. The wyrds each ran to hide behind houses on the flanks.
Cygnar turn 1
Stormwall moved forward and started killing Mannikins. Centurion moves up to .1" of woldwrath's threat range and puts up polarity field. The hunter moves into the forest and shoots down my Gallows grove. Junior, Hayley, squire, and strange move in a line behind the wall.
Jakes and thunderhead are position to take the far left flag but Justin forgot they were dominate only on this scenario.. Thorne just moves into position for next turn.
Circle turn 2
I see a chance to take out some support with the woldwrath. He moves up to max and takes a shot at the Squire behind the wall. The shot misses but only scatters 1" clipping Haley, squire, strange, and junior. Haley and junior negate the damage with power field. Strange is immune to electrical and the Squire takes a few. Oh well.
The forest wall moves forward. The right wyrd takes a shot at the hunter in the forest. Boosted hit and damage later, the hunter has a crippled gun. The left wyrd be moves behind the forests. Blackclads phase jump to stones. Baldur moves up and puts roots of the earth on the right exposed wyrd and wrath. He also puts all wall out in from of wrath blocking stormwall from charging.
Cygnar turn 2
Justin realized his mistake with the flags so Jakes and thunderhead move toward the zone, trying to be relevant to the game. The hunter shoots at the wyrd and does minimal damage. The Centurion charges the wrath but engages the wyrd as well. Does pretty much nothing to the wrath and cripples either the mind or the body of the wyrd. Which doesn't really matter.
Stormwall moves in to stealth range of one sentry stone and kills it. Hayle feats and tks thunderhead thru Thorne letting them both move a little. Thunderhead moves to be in range for next turn. Thorne then charges and kills the other sentry stone. Jakes moves up behind the house.
Circle turn 3
Under Hayley's feat there isn't much you can do. All my wolds heal one thanks to theme. The wrath punches the Centurion. Fails to kill. Wyrd takes a "Shot" at it and the Centurion lives with most systems crippled. Megalith pops his animus and moves over to screen baldur. The Guardian shuffles a little. Wyrd shoots at Thorne not doing much. The black clads shift to engage thunderhead and the hunter. Baldur puts a wall in thunderhead's charge lane, drops to 1, and feats.
I was saving my feat for the counter feat.
Cygnar turn 3
He sees a chance for assassination and decides to go for it. The Centurion kills off the wyrd. Then pokes the wrath. Stormwall shoots the shifting stone blocking Los to baldur. Then takes a shot a baldur, hits but shieldguards to the Guardian. The rest of his mini guns fail to do much damage. Hunter kills the blackclad engaging him. Something else kills off the black clad engaging thunderhead. Thunderhead moves in a pulses so his main gun will auto hit baldur. Baldur transfers the damage to the guardian. Hayley moves over by the objective. Jr puts arcane shield on stormwall and Jakes moves to hide behind the house. Squire and strange durdle about.
Circle turn 4
I think I have a chance to knock down Hayley by punching the objective and then shooting her down with a wyrd and a couple crevasses from baldur. The problem is that all 4 of our warbeasts and Jacks are in the way. Premeasuring is difficult because the models are in the way but I think I have it.
Guardian goes to take out Thorne, misses needing a boosted 6.. Thorne dodges out of range next to megalith. He is now it megalith range to take care of thunderhead.and stay out of wrath's charge lane. Megalith moves up and tries to get out of the way. He throws thunderhead into the house doing some collateral damage. Woldwrath is just.short of reaching the objective... darn.
Plan b. The wyrd takes some shots at storm wall. First shot boost damage and roll a 5 on 4 dice... the other 2 shots do average damage to stormwall. Baldur with 4 debt tokens charges the Centurion and finishes it off. Then casts roots on himself and puts a wall in front of himself cause 17/20 is a thing. Woldwrath charges in and also fails to kill stormwall.
Circle turn 4
Hayley puts up her new force barrier spell. And heads towards the flag behind the house. Thunderhead charges woldwrath and then stormwall finished him off. Hunter takes a shot at baldur and misses. Strangewayes moves to be in position to repair stormwall.
Circle turn 5
I want to kill stormwall this turn. Megalith shuffles around thunderhead and punches stormwall but doesn't get the job done.
Wold guardian moves and kills thunderhead. The wyrd aims and shoots at the engage thorne. Misses the first shot and does negligible damage to the guardian. Second and third shots do average damage to thorne.
The smart play here would be to have baldur moves over to the zone with his wolds but he is withing 10" of stormwall. With 5 debts to the devourer he charges stormwall and puts himself down. Baldur puts roots on himself and heals for 2. Devours debt does 5 leaving baldur on 2 with no transfers. Wolds were full of fury any way.
Cygnar turn 5
All he has to do is put 2 damage on baldur for the win. Junior shoots him, no damage. Strangeways sprays, no damage. Jakes hits and spikes damage. Night night baldur.
Post game thoughts:
It was a great game and if I hadn't risked baldur so much at the end and cleared off his tokens I was in a good position to win. We both ditched scenario and went for the grind.
I think Baldur has a good game into Haley trading feat for feat. I like the wold theme but it doesn't hit very hard at all. I think switching out the Gallows grove for a stoneshaper is probably the way to go as well.
Thanks for the read, feed back is welcome.
